How To Celebrate The Holidays In an RV
If you’re looking for a different way to celebrate the holidays, there’s no better way than to hit the road in your RV and spend Christmas in the great outdoors. With a little forethought and planning, you can enjoy the holiday season in a unique way while making memories that will last a lifetime.
Select and secure a location.
Many RVers head for the ski slopes at holiday time. Others point their RVs toward a warm, sunny climate. Wherever you go, be sure to call ahead to make a reservation, as many RV parks fill up to capacity during the holidays.
Decorate your RV.
Half the fun of hitting the road at Christmastime is decorating the RV to make it look just like home. The trick is to decorate on a smaller scale to adjust for the limited space. For example, consider a tabletop Christmas tree rather than a full-size one. Use small garlands and wreaths to add a color and style without taking up too much room. Stringing lights inside and outside will create a festive look, while RV-themed ornaments add a nice finishing touch to your decorations.
Plan ahead for Christmas dinner.
If you intend to have a traditional Christmas dinner of turkey or ham, make sure you have enough kitchen space, utensils, and supplies on hand. Otherwise, you may want to scale back to a more manageable meal. You can you can save space in your refrigerator by waiting until the last minute to pick up larger food items. It also helps to make desserts, casseroles, and other dishes ahead of time. Or, host a potluck dinner with your RV neighbors and have everyone bring a dish.
Be prepared for bad weather.
Unless you plan to Christmas in a warm area, be sure to prepare for inclement weather. Always carry a well-stocked emergency kit that includes flashlights, batteries, blankets, emergency flares and first aid supplies. Also, be sure to have enough food and water to last for a few days in case you get snowed in.
Fun RV Christmas Activities
One of the best things about RVing during the holidays is the wide choice of activities to enjoy with the family.
Arrange a white elephant exchange.
Invite your RV park neighbors to bring an inexpensive wrapped gift and put them all on a table. People pick numbers out of a hat and select a present one at a time by number. The fun part is that each person has the option of “stealing” a present someone else has already selected. Everyone ends up with a present, and a good time is had by all.
Attend nearby Christmas events.
To help visitors get into the holiday spirit, many cities and towns offer fun events such as Christmas tree lightings, caroling, marshmallow roasts, and other activities. If your RV park doesn’t have a calendar of local events, check online for activities in your area.
Break with tradition.
Climb a mountain or spend Christmas day at the beach? Why not! If you RV in the right climate there are many things you can do to break out of the traditional Christmas Day mold. While at the beach, be sure to send photos to all your friends snowed in up north.
Make a difference.
Find a church, shelter or nonprofit organization in the area and volunteer to help the needy during the holidays. Serving food at a Christmas meal, donating warm clothes, or bringing toys to young kids is a great way to celebrate the real spirit of the season.
